Two dead, many missing after boat capsizes in Brahmaputra near Guwahati

In Assam, a boat carrying at least 36 people capsized in Brahmaputra river in Guwahati Wednesday afternoon.

The Army, NDRF and SDRF teams are pressed into rescue work. Two bodies have been recovered so far while another 15 passengers have been rescued.

Official sources said that along with passengers, the boat was also carrying motorbikes and goods.

The ill-fated boat was going to North Guwahati from Guwahati when it reportedly hit a pole following the failure of the engine.

Administration has made operational two helpline numbers to provide information. The numbers are- 0361, 2733052 and 2684407.

media reports, the country made boat Brahmaputra reportedly developed a technical problem following which it collided with a pole near Ashwaklanta Temple in the Brahmaputra.

The boat was carrying excess passengers and had not sufficient life jackets. Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal has ordered an inquiry.

Several ministers and senior officials have visited the incident site to monitor rescue operation.

Meanwhile, the Inland Water Transport department has temporally suspended the plying of country made boat in the Brahmaputra after the incident
