Japan mulls launching visa-free flights to Russia’s Kurils – report | | | Japan 16 january The Japanese government has been pondering over a possibility to launch visa-free flights from Japanese northern island of Hokkaido to Russia’s southern Kuril islands of Kunashir and Iturup, Japanese Yomiuri Shimbun daily reported, as cited by RIA Novosti. The proposed flights are to facilitate the travelling for former residents of the four disputed islands now living in Japan. At the moment, the former Japanese residents of the islands are able to reach the Kurils by sea, but it is only possible from May to October. The proposal is said to be in line with the agreement reached by Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Japanese counterpart, Shinzo Abe, during their December meeting in Nagato with regards to planned facilitation of visa regime. | | | |
