6 women die in stampede at Indian religious festival

At least six women believed to be in their 60s and 70s died and another 10 people were injured in a reported stampede that occurred after pilgrims returning home from a Makar Sankranti harvest festival were boarding a boat at a jetty in West Bengal on Sunday evening, the Hindustan Times reported. Plagued by long lines, the people reportedly rushed to the vessel in disarray. Some of the them were later taken to the hospital for treatment. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi authorized financial compensation to families of the deceased, expressing his condolences. Meanwhile, local authorities denied there was a stampede, claiming the women died of “heart attacks.”
