| Policemen managing minority pickets’ easy targets of militants | | | |  Srinagar, Dec 12, (Agencies) Policemen guarding minorities in Kashmir Valley are easy targets of militants as the pickets managed by cops in no way can be termed as secure and safe.
Questions are being raised over the strategy and planning of Government after militants on Tuesday gunned down four policemen in Zainapora area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district.
Anees Ahmad Mir, a resident of Souch, Kulgam; Mehraj-u-din, resident of Bandipora; Hamidullah, resident of Anantnag and Abdul Majeed, a resident of Ganderbal, all cops fall prey to the bullets of militants at Zainpora while the video that surfaced on social media networking sites showing how bodies of these policemen were shifted from a tin-shed shocked the conscience of peace loving people.
“How can you expect these policemen to secure the lives of minorities who themselves are living in tin-sheds without any facility and avenues,” wrote a netizen.
“Why these pickets are there when minorities are safe in Kashmir. Its all about politics. Those guarding minorities frequently become easy targets of militants,” wrote another netizen on facebook.
In May this year when a cop Shameem Ahmed of Yaripora Kulgam was killed while militants attacked a minority picket at Wadwun Budgam, there were reports that security establishment will secure all the minority pickets, but till date nothing like that has happened.
Militants in recent past have frequently attacked minority pickets with a motive to decamp with their service rifles. In August this year, armed militants thrashed some cops guarding minorities at Ichgam Budgam. The armed militants even searched for weapons. “Such incidents do and will occur till we don’t secure these pickets fully,” said a police official wishing anonymity.
A relative of the deceased policemen told srinagar based news agency that it is not only about the loss of life but the Government doesn’t clear the pension and other files if the deceased cop loses his service rifle. “It takes years together for the Board to decide about the fate of deceased cop whether the victim family should be given monetary benefits or not.”
