Rajapaksa steps down as Sri Lankan PM

Sri lanka 15 December(Agencies)
In Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa on Saturday resigned from the post of Prime minister after being controversially appointed seven weeks ago.

Rajapaksa was appointed Prime minister by President Maithirpala Sirisena on 26th October suddenly replacing Ranil Wickremsinghe. However, he failed to garner majority in Parliament and President attempt to dissolve parliament was nullified by Supreme court in a decision on Thursday. Rajapaks also suffered setback at the hands of a lower court which restrained him from functioning on a quo warranto petition filed by Wickremsinghe and his MPs.

Supreme Court had refused to vacate on Friday an interim order of lower court restraining Rajapaksa and his cabinet from functioning and fixed hearings in January after vacation. Wickremsinghe will be sworn in again to the post of Prime minister on Sunday along with his cabinet. President Sirisena has claimed in the past that he would never reappoint Wickremsinghe but the political realities forced him to do so.
