| JRL’s Badami Bagh march foiled, Geelani placed under house arrest, Mirwaiz, Malik detained | | Valley shuts, restrictions imposed in Srinagar areas, roads leading to Badami Bagh sealed | | |  Srinagar, Dec 17 (Agencies): Authorities on Monday foiled the protest march called by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik by imposing restrictions in Srinagar areas and sealing all the roads leading towards Badami Bagh Army cantonment.
However, a complete shutdown was observed for the third consecutive day across the Valley against the seven civilian killings in Pulwama on Saturday.
JRL had called for a three-day shutdown and a protest march towards Badami Bagh on Monday against the killings in Pulwama on last Saturday.
In view of the protest march called by JRL, the district administration Srinagar had imposed restrictions in Srinagar areas falling under the jurisdiction of Nowhatta, Safa Kadal, Khanyar, Rainawari, Maharaj Gunj and Maisuma.
A large contingent of police and paramilitary troopers has been deployed on roads to thwart any protests in Srinagar areas especially in Old City areas here, witnesses said.
Besides, the traffic was not allowed to ply on Pantha Chowk-Sonwar- Dalgate road stretch.
“In view of security restrictions in Srinagar, traffic was not allowed to ply on Pantha Chowk-Sonwar- Dalgate road stretch,” officials said.
No traffic was allowed to ply on Gupkar road stretch from Grand Place crossing, they said, adding that commuters were requested to use alternate routes to reach their destinations.
Meanwhile, Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Geelani continued to remain under house detained while the police detained Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Molvi Umar Farooq outside his Nigeen residence after he tried to take out a protest march to Army cantonment Badami Bagh Srinagar.
JKLF chief Muhammad Yasin Malik was also detained at Budshah Bridge when he tried to lead a protest march to Army cantonment Badami Bagh Srinagar from Gawkadal.
Geelani has been put under house detention as heavy contingents of police and paramilitary CRPF was deployed outside his residence at Hyderpora.
However, Mirwaiz defied the house detention and carried out a protest march along with dozens of his supporters but was detained outside his Nigeen residence.
Malik too took out a protest march from Maisuma bund here after remaining hiding for two days to evade arrest but was stopped near Budshah Bridge.
During his detention, clashes also enrooted in the area after youth started pelting stones on them and in retaliation police used teargas canisters to disperse them.
Besides, following the call given by JRL, all the shops and other business establishments, petrol pumps and educational institutions remain closed while as traffic was also off the roads.
Meanwhile, clashes also erupted at scores of places including Mahjoor Nagar, Soura, Eidgah, Kani Kadal, Nowgam and Nai Sadak during which forces used tear gas canisters to disperse them.
A senior police officer while talking to KNS said that the situation across the Valley remained peaceful and under control.
Meanwhile, the train services from Baramulla to Banihal continued to remain suspended for the third consecutive here as ‘a security reason’.
Moreover, the mobile internet services also remained suspended for the third consecutive day.
However, the 2g internet services as per local users were restored on late Sunday evening but was snapped shortly again.
