| Curtains come down on 22nd Commonwealth Games ; India finish fourth overall with 61 medals, including 22 gold | | | |  Birmingham 09 August
The Commonwealth Games 2022 came to an end last night with a glittering closing ceremony at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. The action-packed edition Games concluded following eleven days of sporting activities in which more than 5,000 athletes from 72 nations and territories competed.
The closing ceremony kicked off with a musical performance from Solihull band Ocean Colour Scene. This was followed by a musical performance from the Birmingham-based band Dexys Midnight Runners. One of the biggest bands of all time, UB40 added more to the event, while other musicians and bands from the Midlands region entertained the crowd with their performance. It was followed by an appearance from the athletes of the 72 participating nations and territories who took a walk around the Stadium. The Indian contingent was led by Boxer Nikhat Zareen and Table tennis player Achanta Sharath Kamal with the Indian flag at the closing ceremony.
The curtains were drawn on the Birmingham Games with the lowering of the flag of the Commonwealth Games Federation which was handed over to the state of Victoria in Australia which will be hosting the next edition of the Games in 2026.
At Commonwealth Games 2022, India finished fourth in the overall medals tally with a total of 61 medals including 22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze. Indian contingent gave a commendable performance at the games, winning unexpected medals from sports like lawn bowls, judo and athletics. Wrestling topped the medal chart with 12 medals including six gold while weightlifting accounted for 10 medals. The Men’s Hockey team won silver, which was the last medal of Commonwealth Games 2022 for India in this editon.
India wrapped up the final day at the Commonwealth Games with a remarkable performance, winning four gold medals, one silver and a bronze yesterday.
In Badminton, PV Sindhu clinched the Women's Singles title while Lakshya Sen claimed the Men's Singles title. In Men's Doubles, pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy won the third gold medal from Badminton.
In Table Tennis, Achanta Sharath Kamal clinched his second gold medal from the Games after winning the Men's Singles final. On the other hand, G Sathiyan won the Table Tennis Men's singles bronze medal.
The Men's Hockey team settled for silver after losing to Australia 0-7 in the final.
Australia topped the final standings with 178 medals including 67 gold, 57 silver, 54 bronze, followed by Host England with 175 medals including 56 gold, 65 silver, 53 bronze. Canada stood third with 92 medals including 26 gold medals, 32 silver and 34 bronze. | | | | |
