I&B Ministry issues advisory on obligation of Public Service Broadcasting for private broadcasters
 
New Delhi January 30:-
Information and Broadcasting Ministry on Monday issued an advisory on obligation of Public Service Broadcasting for private broadcasters. The Guidelines requires the broadcasters to undertake public service broadcasting for 30 minutes every day. The Ministry has clarified the content need not be of 30 minutes at a stretch and could be spread over smaller time slots.

The theme for the broadcasting should comprise of content of national importance and of social relevance like education and spread of literacy, agriculture and rural development, welfare of women, national integration and protection of environment and cultural heritage. The broadcaster has to submit a monthly report online in this regard on the Broadcast Seva Portal.

The advisory seeks to achieve the objective of Public Service Broadcasting by private satellite TV channels through voluntary compliance and self-certification.

In November last year, the Ministry had issued the guidelines for Uplinking and Downlinking of Television Channels in India . The Guidelines, among other things, required private broadcasters to undertake public service broadcasting for 30 minutes every day. The Ministry today undertook extensive consultations with the private satellite TV channel Broadcasters and their associations and based on their inputs issued the advisory.
