Kashmir valley is gradually becoming the drug hub of India
 
Kashmir has overtaken Punjab in terms of drug abuse and currently ranks second among the top drug consuming states in India. Northeast tops the list of drug abuse in India, with Kashmir not far behind. During the last 3 years, around 600 cases have been registered against drug dealers, while around 1,000 people have been arrested.
In the midst of comprehensive crackdown against drug peddlers by law enforcement agencies, nearly 600 cases have been registered against drug dealers in Central Kashmir during the last 3 years, while around 1,000 people have been arrested.
Kashmir valley is gradually becoming the drug hub of India a recent study conducted by the Department of Psychology of the Government Medical College has revealed that Kashmir has overtaken Punjab in terms of drug abuse and currently ranks second among the top drug-abusing states in India.Northeast tops the list of drug abuse in India, with Kashmir not far behind.
According to the police, 591 cases were registered in Srinagar, Ganderbal and Budgam districts during the last 3 years, while 1012 were arrested in violation of the law. Srinagar police says that, 92 cases were registered against drug dealers in 2020, 74 in 2021 and 169 cases were registered in 2022 and 159, 120 and 286 people were arrested respectively. It includes 209 grams of brown sugar, 4 kg 601 grams of heroin, 47 kg 924 grams of hashish, 141 kg 79 grams of fikki, 14 thousand 657 bottles of intoxicating liquor, 1 lakh 42 thousand 100 narcotic tablets, 67 grams of ganja and 121 kg 753 grams of hemp and 3 kg 500 grams of crystal meth.
In response to Right to Information Activist MM Shuja's right to information request, Ganderbal Police said that during the last 3 years, 83 cases were registered in the district and 111 drug dealers were arrested. In 2020, 24 cases were registered against drug dealers and 30 people were detained while the number of cases registered in 2021 was 21 and the number of people arrested was 27, however, in 2022, 38 cases were registered and 54 drug dealers were arrested. While added more and said that during mentioned period hemp, drug bottles and tikis, heroin, hashish and other narcotics were recovered and 16 vehicles were also confiscated besides destroying the hemp cultivated on 37 kanals and 19 marla land.
Ganderbal Police said that 83 cases were registered in the district in the last 3 years and 111 people were arrested. The police said that the district registered 24 cases in 2020, 21 in 2021 and the highest number of 38 cases in 2022 and during this time, 30 people were arrested in 2020, 27 in the following year and 54 in the previous year. Police said that a large amount of drugs and narcotics were exported and seized. According to a recent survey by the Jammu and Kashmir government, about 70,000 people are addicted to drugs in Kashmir, and 52,000 of them are injecting heroin. Common substances used by drug addicts in Kashmir are cannabis, heroin and brown sugar
. A study by the Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience, Kashmir also reported that 61.70 percent of drug addicts in Kashmir are unmarried while 33.50 percent are married, indicating that not only youth but Elderly people are also becoming victims of drug abuse.
