Terrorist, soldier killed in Lolab ongoing operation

Srinagar, July 24:
An unidentified terrorist and a soldier were killed in an overnight and ongoing anti-terror operation in the Lolab area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
The incident occurred during an anti-terrorist operation launched by the Army and Police in the Lolab area, following intelligence inputs about possible terrorist movements.
The operation began on few days ago, based on specific information regarding the presence of terrorists in the general area of Kowut, Kupwara.

“Based on specific input regarding the presence of terrorists in general area Kowut, Kupwara, a Joint Search Operation was launched by #IndianArmy and @JmuKmrPolice on days leading up to 23 July 2024,” the Chinar Corps posted on X.

On Tuesday, security forces noticed suspicious movements and challenged the suspects, who responded with indiscriminate fire, leading to a fierce gunfight.

“In the ensuing firefight, one terrorist has been eliminated and an NCO injured. Operation is in progress,” the Army said on Wednesday morning.

However, the injured soldier, Naik Dilwar Khan of the 28 RR, later succumbed to his injuries.

The operation is still going on as security forces continue to search the area for any remaining threats.

The officer said that the operation was put on hold on Tuesday night due to darkness and additional reinforcements were rushed to the area to prevent the terrorists from escaping.

“A terrorist has been killed and his identity will be ascertained,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kupwara, Shobhit Saxena told Greater Kashmir. “Operation in the area is underway.”

This encounter comes in the wake of recent infiltration attempts in north Kashmir.

On Tuesday, a soldier was killed while thwarting an infiltration bid in Jammu’s Poonch district.

The security forces have been on high alert, conducting regular anti-terror operations to prevent any potential threats.

The Army and Police continue to work together, utilising intelligence inputs and surveillance to maintain peace and security.
