The Film Federation of India has announced that ‘Laapataa Ladies’ directed by Kiran Rao has been chosen as India’s official entry for Oscars 2025. The 13-member select committee headed by Assamese Director Jahnu Barua unanimously decided on Laapataa Ladies, produced by Aamir Khan and Rao, for reckoning in the Best Foreign Film Category 2025 at the Academy Awards. The Juri’s Citation on ‘Laapataa Ladies’ stated that Indian women are a strange mixture of submission and dominance. Well-defined, powerful characters in one world a LAAPATAA LADIES (Hindi) captures this diversity perfectly, though in a semi-idyllic world and in a tongue-in-cheek way. A story that can simultaneously be seen as one that needs change, and one that can bring about change.
