AIIMS Jammu expands surgical services with Thyroid tumour surgery

Jammu, Sep 30: As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance surgical services, AIIMS Jammu achieved a significant milestone with the successful removal of a thyroid gland tumour by the Department of ENT.

This procedure, known as a thyroidectomy, was expertly conducted by a dedicated ENT surgical team comprising Dr Amardeep Singh (Associate Professor), Dr Darwin Kaushal (Additional Professor), Dr Akriti Mahajan (Senior Resident) and Dr Muskan Rao (Junior Resident) on September 27, 2024.
The anaesthesia team, which played a crucial role in ensuring the operation’s success, included Dr Sunana Gupta (Additional Professor), Dr Raksha Kundal (Associate Professor), Dr Pallavi Bloria, and Dr Sakshi Gupta (Senior Residents).

“The introduction of specialized thyroid care at AIIMS Jammu comes at a time when there is a notably high prevalence of thyroid disorders, particularly in the regions of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. Many patients in these areas suffer from thyroid swellings, often seeking medical intervention for reasons ranging from cosmetic concerns to more serious conditions such as compressive symptoms, malignancies, and other thyroid-related disorders,” a spokesperson of the Institute said.

“AIIMS Jammu, with its state-of-the-art facilities and highly skilled surgical team, is fully equipped to manage both routine and complex thyroid surgeries, ensuring patients receive the highest standard of care. With its capacity to handle a wide range of thyroid-related surgeries, AIIMS Jammu is poised to offer timely and effective treatment to patients across the region,” spokesperson said, quoting the CEO AIIMS Dr Shakti Gupta.

“This development not only marks a significant expansion in the institute’s surgical capabilities but also underscores AIIMS Jammu’s commitment to providing advanced healthcare solutions to the community. The launch of specialised surgeries at AIIMS Jammu is expected to deliver substantial benefits, including improved patient outcomes through earlier diagnosis and treatment. It also represents a major step forward in enhancing healthcare infrastructure in the region, contributing to both patient welfare and the professional growth of the medical staff involved,” Dr Gupta said.
