Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi Backs Waqf Amendment Bill, Calls It a Step Toward Progress | | | Srinagar, April 02 : Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board Chairperson, Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi, has voiced strong support for the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024, asserting that it will enhance the management of Waqf properties without causing any adverse effects.
According to KNS corrpondent , Dr. Andrabi highlighted that the bill, once enacted, would significantly improve Waqf institutions by introducing greater transparency and accountability. She underscored the importance of legislative reforms in strengthening the governance of Waqf assets.
The proposed amendments seek to modernize Waqf property management by ensuring equitable representation, including for Muslim women and non-Muslims, and minimizing legal disputes. A key aspect of the bill is the renaming of the Act to the "Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development Act, 1995." It also aims to refine property dedication rules and repeal Section 40, which previously allowed Waqf boards to unilaterally declare properties as Waqf.
Supporters believe the bill will curb corruption, enhance efficiency, and bring much-needed reforms to Waqf governance. However, its introduction has sparked both support and opposition, highlighting the complexities of managing Waqf assets in India.
