| Flood situation eases in Kerala; Relief and Rescue operations continue | | | |  Kerala 20 August
The last stage of rescue operations is progressing in full swing in rain-hit Kerala where life is limping back to normalcy with the water gradually ebbing out of many regions.
Though the flood havoc has been relieved to some extent, the situation in Chengannur remains unchanged. As per reports, hundreds of people are still trapped in various locations there. The rescue operations using helicopter are continuing to save people trapped in remote locations.
As per district collector of Ernakulam the rescue operations in the district is complete. Food water and essential medicines have been distributed in affected places .50000 food packets were distributed through air dropping and 97000 packets were distributed using trucks.
Railroad services were partially restored and commercial flight operations from Kochi resumed today from the Cochin Naval Base. Alliance Air, a subsidiary of Air India, is operating from the Naval Base. Efforts are on to restore electricity and communication networks. With 14 more deaths on Sunday, the death toll since 08th August touched 210 and the maximum number of deaths were reported from Idukki, where 43 people lost their life.
Four panchayats in Pandanad Chengannur and Nelliyampathy in Palakkad are still isolated .in Pandanad rescue operations will continue for two more days and in nelkiyampathy stranded people would be airlifted once the weather is clear. Meanwhile, the rescue operations in Venmani Chengannur is in the last stage.
Meanwhile, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has called for an all-party meeting on Tuesday to discuss the relief and rehabilitation activities The water level in Idukki dam has receded as the rainfall in the catchment area declined In the worst flood the state has ever subjected to, more than 1500 house was destroyed completely and 27000 houses partially .crops in around 45000 hectares were also destroyed. As per official data,39 people are missing and 133 were injured .over seven lakh people are staying in around five thousand camps.
Meanwhile, the Centre has set up 3,757 medical camps in Kerala to prevent epidemic diseases even though no outbreak of any communicable disease has been reported there so far. The Health Ministry said while no outbreak of any communicable disease has been reported, health experts opine that once floodwaters start to recede, the environment will become conducive for epidemic diseases.
The state has been asked for daily surveillance to detect early warning signs of an outbreak. As per the Health ministry statement, the first batch of 90 types of medicines in requested quantity will reach Kerala today. | | | | |
