PM to interact with Indian athletes’ contingent bound for Tokyo Olympics

Olympics is among the most prestigious sporting events in the history of sports and qualifying for it brings a lot of pride to the nation. It further opens gates for name, fame and medals for the country and the athletes, as winning an Olympics medal is the foremost dream of most athletes.
The Tokyo Olympics 2020 is just round the corner, taking place from 23 July 2021. This time the Indian contingent for the Tokyo games has a lot on their shoulders as the nation has high hopes from them. To boost the spirit of the athletes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with the Indian athletes’ contingent bound for Tokyo Olympics today at 5 PM via video conferencing.

The interaction will boost the confidence of the athletes

The interaction scheduled with the Prime Minister will aim to motivate the athletes, ahead of Tokyo 2020 games. PM Modi had recently reviewed the preparations for the facilitation of India’s contingent at Tokyo-2020. In Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi discussed the inspirational journeys of some of the athletes who are going to Tokyo. He also urged the country to come forward and support the Indian athletes’ contingent bound for Tokyo Olympics

Anurag Thakur, Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports; Nisith Pramanik, MoS Youth Affairs & Sports and Kiren Rijiju, Law Minister will also be present in the interaction.

Indian contingent flying to Tokyo

The contingent for the Tokyo 2020 games is the biggest ever contingent which will be competing for medals since 1900. The first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896 and it took India only four years before seeing their first representation at the Summer Olympic Games.

A total of 126 athletes across 18 sports disciplines from India will be participating in the Tokyo Olympics. The 69 cumulative events across the 18 sport disciplines are also the highest ever for India.

Notable firsts in terms of participation in Tokyo

For the first time in Indian Olympics history, Bhavani Devi, a Fencer (Sabre) from India will participate in the Olympic Games.
Nethra Kumanan is the first-ever female Sailor from India to qualify for the Olympic Games.
Sajan Prakash and Srihari Nataraj are the first Swimmers from India to qualify for an Olympic Games by achieving the ‘A’ qualification standard in swimming.
