Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi Laid the Foundation stone for
1000 MW Pakal Dul Hydro Project of Chenab Valley Power Projects [P] Ltd.

Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi laid the foundation of 1000 MW Pakal Dul HE Project being implemented by Chenab Valley Power Projects Ltd, a Joint venture of NHPC Ltd (49%), JKSPDC Ltd (49%) and PTC Ltd (2%) on 19th May 2018 at Zorawar Singh Auditorium, University of Jammu at Jammu, J&K.

N.N Vohra Governor of J&K, Ms Mehbooba Mufti Chief Minister, Govt. of J&K, Sh Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Shipping, Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Govt. of India, Dr. Jitendra Singh Union Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region (Independent Charge) & Minister of State for Prime Minister’s Office, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space, Government of India, Sh R.K Singh Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy (Independent Charge), Sh Kavinder Gupta Deputy Chief Minister Govt. of J&K , Sh Sunil Kumar Sharma Minister for Power Development, Govt. of J&K and Sh Jugal Kishore Sharma, Member of Parliament also graced the occasion.
During the address Hon’ble Prime Minister appreciated the initiative taken by Govt. of J&K and NHPC to form a Joint Venture Company to harness the untapped hydro-potential of the State.
Pakal Dul Project is of strategic importance to India as well as J&K as this is the first project that shall utilize the permissible storage under Indus Water Treaty. The precious water of our rivers which were earlier going unutilized to Pakistan can now be utilized for water supply and irrigation purposes in the region. This will immensely benefit for the local population.
Pakal Dul is on River Marusudar, a tributary of River Chenab at District Kishtwar J&K and it will be the biggest Hydroelectric Project in Jammu & Kashmir. The project shall be completed in 66 months at an estimated cost of Rs 8112Cr and generate 3330MU of electricity annually. The project envisages construction of 167m high Concrete Faced Rockfill dam, the highest dam of its kind in India besides two Head Race Tunnels of 9.6 Km each, four Tail Race tunnels of 125m each and a underground Power House of four units of 250 MW each (1000 MW).
The project is included in Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP) and Govt. of India has sanctioned a grant of Rs.1192 Crore to meet the equity contribution requirement of JKSPDC, one of the promoters and a sub-ordinate loan of Rs 2500Cr carrying interest rate of one percent.
Interests of the project affected people shall be taken care through proper implementation of comprehensive Rehabilitation & Resettlement plan approved by GoJK. The cost of land for house and house construction assistance, scholarship to children of Project affected families, training program for skill development etc. has been included in the plan. Also, a provision of Rs 40Cr has been kept in the plan for infrastructural development in the affected areas to improve the socio economic condition of the people.
Local Area Development Fund (LADF) shall be established after commissioning of the project as per the Hydro policy of the Govt. of India and an amount of Rs 28Cr per year shall be available for implementing welfare schemes for the Project affected people on a continuous basis over the life of the project. Extensive CSR activities has also been taken up in the region for the development of local area.
